As a school, we believe that reading (and writing) are the foundations of all learning. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and our aim is for every child to develop a lifelong love of reading and to leave our school able to read fluently, with confidence and understanding.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and in Key Stage 1, reading is closely linked to our phonics teaching, using the Read Write Inc. programme. Children practise their sounds and read fully decodable books, which are matched to their current phonics knowledge.
As children become fluent readers, they move on to a wider range of texts through whole-class reading sessions and independent reading opportunities.
Across the school, we focus on developing fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and reading for pleasure. Children learn to discuss stories, make predictions and talk about character, settings and the author's intent.
We work hard to foster a genuine enjoyment of reading by sharing high quality books and stories every day, organising reading events, such as visiting theatre groups and author visits. We also celebrate World Book Day and other literary events throughout the year. We encourage children to recommend books to other children and have well-stocked book areas in all of our classrooms and in the school library. Our older children enjoy being 'Book Buddies' for the younger children to pass on their love of reading.
We encourage families to read together every day. Our early readers bring home their Read Write Inc. guided reading book alongside other books to practice at home. Our older children take home books from our class libraries and our main school library to suit their reading interests and level.
