Writing at Birch C of E Primary School is purposeful, creative and closely linked to our reading or termly topic. We teach writing through a rich variety of texts and experiences. Children learn to write for a range of audiences and purposes – from stories and poems to reports, letters and explanations.
We use the 'Talk for Writing' approach in the teaching of our fiction units. This approach helps children to internalise story language through imitation, innovations and independent writing (invention.) It builds confidence, vocabulary and enjoyment in storytelling and story writing.
Throughout the school, we teach spelling, grammar and punctuation in meaningful contexts wherever possible, so that children understand how to use these areas effectively in their own writing.
Writing is embedded across our curriculum. For example, children write reports in science, diary entries in history lessons, and explanations in geography, applying their literacy skills in a variety of meaningful ways.
We carefully monitor writing progress through regular assessment of independent tasks and teacher observation.
Our aim is for children to leave our school as confident, capable writers, who enjoy using their literacy skills to learn, express themselves, and explore the world around them.
