Year 5 and 6 Colchester Schools' Tag-rugby competition  December 2025

On a dull, wet and cold morning, we took part in the annual rugby competition, held at Maldon Rugby Club. There were 9 schools involved this year so it was organised as one whole league, and each team played eight games. After a good start of winning two from our first three matches, we then found the standard of opposition pretty tough. Despite this, the children played with a lot of effort and good teamwork, and found their way to the try line many times. I was proud of all of them and they enjoyed their morning. At the end, we were placed joint 5th, having won three games and drawing a thrilling match 4-4.

Well done to our whole team!

Year 5 and 6 Colchester Schools' Cross-country competition  November 2025

These children raced for almost a mile against the fastest runners from other schools in the Colchester district, with each race being competed by 120 - 130 children. Thankfully, the weather this year was cold, but bright and calm.

We had 7 runners who finished in the top half of their field, including three who finished in the top 20! Congratulations to all of them for their excellent performance – they were all tired but happy as they crossed the finish line. Special recognition goes to Rosie (for finishing 19th) and Johnny (for finishing 7th). The superstar of the day though was Delilah, who ran a tactically perfect race. Delilah was the first to cross the line in the Year 5 Girls’ race to claim the gold medal – Fantastic!

All of the children represented the school really well, and on top of the good results, I was also very proud of the way they supported each other. The roar that I could hear from a distance coming from the Birch Year 6s and the parents when Delilah won made my heart burst!

Year 6 Archery tournament October 2025

We competed with nine other schools in a lovely, encouraging atmosphere. Lily, Lacey, Aston and Roman all improved their bow shooting skills as the event progressed, and represented Birch really well. We even had a few ’10’s along the way too!

    Congratulations to our team.
